From taking photos over each other, to forgetting to tape up the camera and finally exposing the role of film on the way to the processing lab. My first attempt at this toy camera thing couldn’t have been more filled with mishaps. That said, I think this illustrates Charlotte’s point that the photographic effect of the camera makes up for a lot.

Trip To Myanmar Encourages Another
February 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Just got back from a long weekend in Myanmar getting to know some of the most wonderful people on the planet. Maybe it’s because everyone in Yangon seems to be taking English classes where the teachers encourage them to practice with foreigners. Maybe it’s because it’s a Buddhist country. Whatever it is, I walked away with an amazing impression and 9 rolls of film. Hopefully, they’ll turn out half as interesting as this guy’s pics. And with some fantastic luck, I’ll get to go again.

Here’s To Kicking It Old School
February 7, 2009 · 4 Comments
We finally managed to get that book out of the mailbox and it’s filled with the kind of photos I wish I’d taken during my sabbatical (thanks guys). The fact that they were all shot analog inspired me to run out and buy an old Nikon FA and give film another try. After all, the quality is better, the equipment is more discreet for street photography, and it’s cheaper which means less concern about it getting damaged or stolen. It’ll be brilliant for our Myanmar trip. Picked the camera up second hand at Prime Camera Center in Peninsula Plaza and planning to test it out at the Thaipusam festival tomorrow. Assuming it’s glitch free, I could be kicking it old school for a while.

Playing With Color
February 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Just discovered this site that clusters flickr photos by color. A nice way of analyzing the role of color in photography and creating mood boards.

But most importantly, it’s just plain nice to play with. Try this game: pick a color and guess what kinds of images will come up (e.g., orange and black). It kept us entertained for a very long time.

Wanted: New Bits Of Glass
February 2, 2009 · 2 Comments
“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.” – Mark Twain
Singapore has me seriously lacking in the colored glass department. My photography has consisted almost entirely of portraits of my wife. They’re gorgeous but starting to bore us both. Off to Myanmar in a few weeks which should replenish the broken glass collection. Fingers crossed.
